Family Classics launched in May 2016, with the intent of introducing new generations to classic family films. This program expanded much needed depth in offerings for families, while expanding into a previously vacant time slot. The series has shown moderate success and building regular attendance to earn a permanent slot, every Saturday morning at 10 am.
Films range from Wizard of Oz and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, to more modern classics, such as Hugo and The Land Before Time. The series has explored films of historical significance, like Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid and Yankee Doodle Dandy, as well as those that cross cultural barriers, such as My Neighbor Totoro and The Wiz.
Affordability being a key priority for this series, the shows maintain the regular admission of $1.99.
Big Screen Classics launched in October 2016, during artoberVA, Richmond’s month long celebration of Art and Culture. This series targets Classic Movie fans in the Golden Age and Big Hollywood eras, through two opportunities per month to enjoy movies that are best seen on the Byrd’s big screen, and varied times.
First Wednesdays at 7:15 pm feature more eclectic titles, labeled Cinema for Cinephiles; and third Sundays will host broader appeal Hollywood Favorites at 2 pm. Tickets are $4.99.
Midnight Movies have been long discussed and desired as a regular staple of the Byrd. Midnight Movies are planned to be back for a once-per-month event, beginning late October 2016.
A sneak peak, titles being decided on are Army of Darkness, Top Gun, Ghostbusters, Fifth Element and Die Hard. If you’d like to make a suggestion, or vote among those, you may do so here: https://goo.gl/gxGOa7
